Sunny weather relief for patients with osteoporosis

Dr. Chris Parker, rheumatologist with ADC, says that a forecast predicting lots of sun and warm weather is great for patients with osteoporosis.

Individuals with osteoporosis (low bone density) have bones that are brittle and thin.   In order to keep from losing additional bone mass, doctors recommend weight bearing exercise such as walking.  Dr. Parker encourages patients to take advantage of the warm days and nights to get a daily walk in.

Who is at risk?

Although women are more prone to low bone density, men are also at risk.  One in two women and up to one in four men over the age of 50 will break a bone.  Throughout the US 54 million people have low bone density or osteoporosis.

No matter the forecast, remember to take your own good weather with you.
