Rainy day kids activity: Heart bags

Looking for a fun kid-friendly activity to do with the kids?

Heart Bag

Here’s an idea to help get the creative juices flowing! Take your tired, reusable bags and make them something special this Valentine’s Day! This is a simple and quick craft that you can do with your kids.

Materials you will need

  • Fabric bag (any size-depending on use)
  • Fabric paint, 3 different colors
  • Pencil with eraser
  • Heart-shaped stencil (find some online or make your own)
  • Cardboard

1) Take your thin piece of cardboard and place into the bag. This will keep the bag from sticking together once you start painting.

There are two ways to do this, depending on the look you are trying to acheive. Negative space will give the illusion of the heart shape with surrounding dots, or keep it simple and use the stencil to fill in the heart.

2) Take your fabric paint and place in a disposable plate or bowl.

3) Take the eraser of your pencil and dip it into the paint.

The goal is to divide the heart into three different colored sections, going from top to bottom.

4) Make several dots over the bottom third of the heart and work your way up, using a different color for each section of the heart. I started at the bottom with the darkest color in order to make the colors blend.

Don’t be discouraged if it looks a little light. You can achieve a more vibrant look if you repeat the painting process a second time.

Have fun!
