Plan ahead to avoid holiday party pitfalls

Holiday parties don't have to sabotage your weight loss plan.

With holiday party season upon us, is it possible to make it through the next 6 weeks without gaining weight?

According to ADC’s Health Risk Management experts, the answer is a resounding “Yes!” But the key is to plan ahead.

You don’t have to avoid holiday parties, just have a strategy in place.

Before the party

  • Offer to bring a fruit / vegetable platter or other low-calorie dishes.
  • Plan some low-calorie days the week before the event.
  • Have a high day (or two) of physical activity in the couple of days leading up to an event. Make a plan to get in two bouts of physical activity the day of the party.

During the party

  • Try to eat 2 – 3 cups of vegetables first. Then, fill up even more with at least two non-caloric beverages (i.e. diet soda, or sparkling water). Keep track of your servings.
  • Limit alcohol.
  • Dance the night away or keep walking and moving around.

After the party

  • If you are hosting a party, toss out or give away leftovers. If you are the guest, do not take leftovers home.
  • Plan out some low-calorie days for the week after the party.
  • If your caloric intake was high, push yourself to do extra physical activity for at least 2 -3 days the following week.
