Serving patients in the hospital

Hospitalists at The Austin Diagnostic Clinic see patients when they are admitted to the hospital. They work in the hospital, rather than an office, to see ADC patients and coordinate their care between the hospital, and your primary care physicians and specialists.  Since hospitalists are part of your ADC health team, they can access and add information into your electronic medical record so all your doctors have an accurate overview of your health.

ADC hospitalists specialize in either Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. Because they work full-time in the hospital, they are up-to-date with standards of care.

ADC hospitalists are not available as primary care providers and do not take appointments.

Vivian Pugh, hospitalist

Dr. Vivian Pugh, Hospitalist

The Austin Diagnostic Clinic welcomed a new doctor this week. Dr. Vivian Pugh joined the Internal Medicine team as a hospitalist.

Dr. Pugh will visit ADC patients who have been admitted to the hospital and is well-versed in inpatient care.

She received her medical degree from the Universidad de Monterrey in Monterrey,Mexico, and she went through a clerkship program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Dr. Pugh then went through the residency program at Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain,Connecticut where she became Chief Medical Resident.

Dr. Pugh has been working as a hospitalist since 2010. Her most recent experience was at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, where she was an Associate Director of Inpatient Medicine Hospitalist.

Her professional affiliations include the Travis County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association and American College of Physicians.

Dr. Pugh speaks Spanish fluently.

Dr. Rossana Garcia to visit inpatients in North Austin

A new hospitalist specializing in internal medicine has joined The Austin Diagnostic Clinic’s Internal Medicine department.

Dr. Rossana Garcia will see ADC patients who have been admitted to the hospital. Her duties include coordinating care with the hospital, communicating with a patient’s primary care provider and specialists, and staying in touch with family members.

Medical background

Dr. Garcia is a board-certified hospitalist and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She speaks Spanish, and will office out of ADC’s main clinic in North Austin.

She was a hospitalist at Scott & White Hospital in Round Rock from 2008 to 2012. Before that, she served as an assistant professor at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine in Round Rock,Texas.

Dr. Garcia received her degree from and did her internship and residency at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Miami,FL.

Affiliations

She is a member of the Travis County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, Society of Hospital medicine and American Medical Association.

ADC hospitalists are not available as primary care providers.

Welcome Dr. Garcia!

Some patients are startled when they are admitted to the hospital and are visited by a hospitalist, rather than their specialist or primary care physician. Many want to know what a hospitalist even is.

“A hospitalist is a physician or a physician extender who primarily works in a hospital and not in an office. So we see only hospitalized patients,” said Dr. Rajeev Prakash, ADC Internal Medicine hospitalist.

The Austin Diagnostic Clinic has several hospitalists who specialize in internal medicine. They care for patients once they have been admitted to the hospital by coordinating with the hospital, primary care physicians and specialists. They also make sure to communicate with patients and their families.

Hospitalists also understand patients’ needs once they have been admitted to a hospital. Dr. Prakash says inpatient care is quite different from outpatient care.

“By being full-time hospitalists, we’re very up-to-date and in-tune with the standards of care,” said Dr. Prakash. “Much like your doctor is spending a lot of time in the office doing what they do best – taking care of outpatients.”

Research has show that hospitalists can reduce the amount of time a patient stays in the hospital as well as the cost of treatment. According to a 2007 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the average hospital patient stay was lowered 12 percent by hospitalists.

I think our presence here during your hospital stay leaves you reassured that someone who knows your case is available during your whole hospital stay every day,” said Dr. Prakash.
