Leader of the Month: Sheila Macias

Meet Sheila Macias, Business Supervisor

What departments are you responsible for and how many staff members do you supervise?

I am responsible for providing support for Endocrinology, Surgery, Urology, and Health Risk Management. I currently supervise five Front Desk Business Associates.

What are your goals for your department?

I think communication is key in making any team work.  I hope each team member is able to speak to me openly about any concerns or suggestions they may have to make our sections run smoothly. Teamwork benefits more than the Clinic.  Knowing we can rely on each other makes work not feel like “work.” We spend most of our day together five days a week, so this is our second family! Right now, we are working on getting everyone cross-trained to provide front desk support for each one of our four departments. Although each team member takes ownership of her particular area, it’s nice to know that if we are ever down one person, another team member is willing and able to step up and help out.

Tell us about your education and/or any special training you’ve had.

I attended the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. I received both Leadership and Management Training at my last employment, as a Financial Services Supervisor. I was responsible for 12 to 21 people, collecting on past due accounts at a call center. During my time there, I also assisted the Human Resources Department with the Training and Recruiting of new employees. For a little over a year, I was responsible for posting new job openings online, attending job fairs, reviewing and rating resumes, conducting telephone interviews and in-person interviews, as well as providing some of the New Hire and Supplemental Training.

What do you like about working at ADC?

I love working with the patients. It’s really neat that our departments offer continuity of care.  I love that we get to know them and they get to know us by name. I have patients that go see their providers in another department and come in to our section just to say, “Hi!” It’s also nice to have a supportive group of people to work with, from the doctors, nurses, medical assistants, office managers and business staff.

Tell us a little more about yourself.

I was born in Manila, Philippines. I was just a little girl when we immigrated to the U.S. I grew up in Colorado Springs, Colorado. When I was 21 years old, my family and I relocated to Southern California. My family and I have considered Austin our home now for almost five years. I miss California, but I love Austin!

Who is your hero and why?

My Mom, Linda Marqueses, is and always will be my hero! If I became half the woman she is, I would be so grateful and my children would be so blessed! She has the most generous heart and would do anything for her family. I thank God every single day for blessing me with a such a loving, strong and smart woman for a mom.

What is your favorite quote/saying?

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart…” Colossians 3:23

What is the most recent movie/book that you’ve seen/read?

I just saw Avengers: The Age of Ultron over the weekend with the family. I picked up the book, “Room” but have yet to finish page one. By the way, I have 4 kids.

Share with us a fun experience you’ve had recently.

I tried snowboarding recently. It was fun, but I think I will stick to skiing!
