The combination of fruit and herbs infuses the water with a subtle flavor that intensifies the longer it sits. The fruits used in this recipe have cancer-fighting properties, especially the berries.

This is a wonderful activity you can do with children. Cooking with children is a way to introduce new words to their vocabulary. When you cook, you use words like “saute,” “freeze,” and “chop. This gives children a context in which to use those words.

It’s also a great way to help with math skills. I can be hard for children to conceptualize what a half of a cup or a 1/4 teaspoon looks like. When they see the practical uses in the kitchen, it can help them understand measurements.

Recipe: Fruit and Herb Infused Water

Ingredients

  • Basil, small handful
  • Mint, small handful
  • 2 lemons, sliced
  • 6 strawberries, sliced
  • 2-3 small slices of watermelon, if desired
  • 10-15 blackberries, if desired

Instructions

Fill a glass pitcher with water.

Add fruit and herbs.

Let sit for half an hour.

Add ice when ready to serve.
