Alternatives to Halloween candy

Children In Fancy Costume Dress Going Trick Or Treating

Source: Thinkstock

This year, put an alternate “treat” in your friends’ and neighbors’ Halloween bags.  Children may enjoy spooky stickers, glow items and ghoulish games that last longer than a piece of candy.  And you can feel good about helping develop healthy habits.   Make sure the items are age appropriate for the child at your doorstep.

The ADC Health Risk Management department offers some alternatives to Halloween candy this season.

  • Mini erasers, pencils, pens
  • Colored pencils, crayons, markers, notepads
  • Stickers
  • Pocket-sized games and toys
  • Bubbles
  • Glow sticks
  • Plastic Jewelry/Accessories

Of course, for those who want to hand out food items here’s some healthy options:

  • Mini oranges
  • Snack size bags of pretzels, popcorn or goldfish
