Running Shoes That Will Go the Distance |
|
As our mild winter weather
continues, many Central Texans aren’t waiting around for
spring before hitting the running trails. But before you
suit up, take a few minutes to think about your footwear. Is
it time for a new pair of running shoes? If so, what
features should you look for.
“Wearing proper footwear is
critical,” says
Jean
Hertel, DPM, a
podiatrist at The Austin Diagnostic Clinic. “Shoes that
don’t provide proper support leave runners vulnerable to all
kinds of foot-related injuries.”
To avoid problems, Dr. Hertel gives
the following advice to new and experience runners alike:
Choose the right shoe for the job.
Will you be running on gravel, asphalt, or synthetic track?
Will you be running long distances cross-country or doing
short spurts on a treadmill? Will you be combining running
with other aerobic activities? The answers to these kinds of
questions will determine what type of shoe will work best
for you.
For advice on specific shoe types,
Dr. Hertel suggests visiting a specialty shoe store that has
knowledgeable employees and a good reputation. “An
experienced salesperson will take the time to find out your
running routine and help you find shoes that are the best
match.”
Get a good fit. Of course you need
shoes that accommodate your foot length and width, but
there’s more to a good fit than the size of the shoe. Look
for shoes that are made specifically for your foot type. For
example, people with high arches need shoes with plenty of
shock absorption. Dr. Hertel recommends that runners select
several options, then walk around and run in each pair to
see how they feel.
Look for sturdy construction. Good
quality running shoes do not have to be the most expensive,
but you will pay a little more for sturdy construction and
good materials. These shoes will last longer than their
poorly made counterparts, however, and they will provide
better support and protection.
“Good quality shoes are an
investment in your comfort and safety,” explains Dr. Hertel.
Replace shoes regularly. Even the
highest quality shoes will not last forever. Experts
recommend replacing running shoes every 6 months—more often
if you run more than a few miles per day. And keep in mind
that the midsole cushioning will likely wear out long before
the tread shows signs of wear.
Whether you’re a pro or a beginner,
a good pair of running shoes will keep you on trail to great
health and fitness throughout the running season.
