Gallium Scan for Tumor Localization

Preparation:  There is no prep for this exam. 

What to bring:  Patient should have their CT scans and/or other pertinent examinations available for comparison. 

Appointment Length:  This usually involves several appointments.

Patient is scheduled for the initial visit to receive the radiotracer, which is injected into a vein in their arm.

They return 48-hours later for the first set of scans.

72-hour scans are sometimes needed as well, but that is not determined until after the 48-hour scans have been reviewed by the technologist and physician. 

Scan times are 1 to 2 hours in duration.
