What is a Neurologist?

A neurologist is a physician who specializes in disorders affecting the nervous system. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles.  Neurologists have had a minimum of three year's specialty training following college, medical school and internship. All ADC neurologists are either Board Certified or in the process of becoming certified (that is, they have passed the necessary examinations to practice the specialty of neurology).

Neurologists see patients with a wide range of problems. These include headaches, dizziness, memory loss, confusion, blackouts and seizures,  numbness and tingling, weakness and paralysis of limbs, incoordination of limbs, pain (of extremities,

neck and back), and many other symptoms might bring a patient to see a neurologist.  Some neurological disorders are epilepsy, carpal tunnel syndrome, brain and spinal cord tumors, multiple sclerosis, peripheral neuropathies, Bells Palsy, migraine headaches, Parkinson's disease, restless leg syndrome, stroke, Alzheimer's disease myasthenia gravis, and muscular dystrophy. Neurologists are able to cure some of the diseases of the nervous system and offer symptomatic relief from many others. Advances in research continue to provide new treatments, which can be offered to patients in the future.
