This
procedure involves ingesting a capsule (the size of a large
vitamin pill) that will pass naturally through your digestive
system while taking pictures of the esophagus. The images are
transmitted to sensors, which are placed with adhesives to
your abdomen, to a belt pack data recorder that saves all of
the images. Esophageal capsule endoscopy helps your physician
evaluate and diagnose diseases of the esophagus such as GERD,
Barrett's Esophagus, and Esophageal Varices. The capsule is
passed by the patient into the toilet and flushed away. In
certain chronic gastrointestinal diseases, this method can
also help to evaluate the extent to which your esophagus is
involved or monitor the effect of therapy. The study is
performed in the office and you can return to your daily
activities once completed.
