Esophageal
manometry is a test that measures pressures in your
esophagus to see if it is functioning properly. The test
provides information that assists your doctor in diagnosing
patients with swallowing difficulties and non-cardiac related
chest pain. Esophageal manometry is also used for evaluating
procedures before surgery. A small very flexible catheter (a
tube about the size of a spaghetti noodle) will be gently
inserted through the nose into the esophagus. The catheter
is attached to a machine that records and analyzes the
pressure measurements from sensors on the catheter during a
series of swallows of water. This procedure is
done entirely in the office. This information helps your
physician to diagnose your illness and plan the best treatment
for you.
