What is a Gastroenterologist?
A gastroenterologist is a physician who specializes in disorders and conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach, esophagus, small and large bowel, gall bladder, liver and pancreas. After completing medical school, they train for three years to attain board certification in internal medicine and at least an additional three years of fellowship training in gastroenterology. The gastroenterologist's focus is on the non-surgical and endoscopic management of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.

Gastroenterology Diagnostic Testing

The gastroenterology department is pleased to offer several diagnostic tools designed to study the esophagus.

bullet Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS): A diagnostic tool used to diagnose and stage tumors of the pancreas, biliary tract, esophagus, rectum, lung, mediastinum, stomach and peri-intestinal space.
 
bullet High Resolution Esophageal Manometry: an improvement over usual manometric studies which provides a more detailed view of the esophagus and how it functions.
 
bullet Esophageal pH and Impedance Studies: for patients with reflux who do not respond to the usual antacid treatments.
 
bullet Small Bowel and Esophageal Capsule Endoscopy: are typically used to investigate the small bowel and esophagus with minimal invasiveness.
