Your grill doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, grilling enhances the flavor of many foods – some you may not have even thought of.
Instead of only grilling meat and a few veggies, how about trying one or more of these ingredients on the grill?
You don’t have to be a vegetarian to enjoy tofu, especially on the grill.
Make sure you use firm or extra-firm tofu and press it so it can better absorb marinades. Most recipes call for slicing tofu into slabs ¾ inch thick and marinating for 30 minutes before grilling about five minutes on each side.
Root vegetables aren’t just for winter. But instead of heating up your kitchen with the oven to enjoy roasted beets, turnips, parsnips or carrots, how about trying them on the grill? The grills brings out their natural sweetness and adds a little smokiness to their flavor. You can either cook them in an aluminum pan or aluminum foil or brush them with oil and place them directly on the grill for a crusty exterior.
Lettuce and other greens, like kale and radicchio, take on a crunchier texture and have a slightly charred flavor that pairs well with other grilled foods, especially meats.
Plus, it only takes a few minutes.
Start by giving Romaine lettuce a try. Slice a head of Romaine in half lengthwise, brush it with olive oil, and grill it two to three minutes per side.
Want to jazz up your guacamole? Try grilling halves of avocado, which lends depth to the flavor. Plus, it’s a great way to soften avocados that aren’t quite ripe enough to eat raw.
It’s true! You can grill eggs! You just need a container, like a muffin pan or halved bell peppers.
When planning a cookout, don’t forget dessert. Grilling caramelizes fruit, bringing out natural sugars.
Ideas for fruits to grill: pineapple, peaches, plums, bananas. For smaller fruits like grapes or blueberries, use a pan to keep them from falling into the coals.
