ADC surgeons use robotic-assisted Single-Site™ da Vinci® to reduce scarring, speed recovery

How Single-Site is different
Performing a single incision surgery isn’t new, but combining it with robotic technologies is. ADC’s Dr. Francis Buzad and Dr. Louis Corne have both been working with the new robotic tools and techniques and are currently the only surgeons performing the procedure in Austin. Their partner, Dr. Thomas Brown, is currently assisting and training for the procedure.
Dr. Buzad, one of the early adopters of robotics in general surgery, has been working with da Vinci® technologies since 2008. He says instead of using up to four incisions to remove a gallbladder through earlier laparoscopic techniques, Single-Site™ da Vinci® uses an incision less than one-inch long in the belly button. Plus, the robotic tools give him a better view and extremely precise instruments through which to perform the procedure.
That means patients have less blood loss, less pain, and can leave the hospital sooner. It also means scarring is minimal, because the incision site becomes nearly invisible when it heals.
“My practice is dedicated to minimally-invasive surgery, not only because it is the best clinical option for most patients, but also because it provides a significant benefit to patients, their families and the community,” Dr. Buzad said.
Many surgical uses
Dr. Buzad says robotic surgery can be used in a variety of surgeries. And because of its precision, many patients who weren’t candidates for manual laparoscopic surgery may benefit. Buzad says Single-Site™ da Vinci® helps him perform “minimally invasive surgery in patients with prior abdominal surgeries, complex anatomy, bowel adhesions, and low colon and rectal cancers.”
Some patients have been surprised about how fast they’ve been able to get back to their normal activities. Dr. Buzad says some patients have also needed minimal pain medication after surgery.
